My car, as an M Sport BMW, has the proper gloss black “Shadowline” window trim instead of chrome. But it has all-chrome kidney grilles. I don’t mind how they look, but I’m tempted to change them on account of proper sporty BMWs are kind of expected to have dark kidney grilles.

The thing is, I don’t want an all-black grille on my LeMans Blue car, it’s not enough contrast with the paint. I actually don’t mind how the grille looks, and now with the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! I’m very happy with how the car looks:

But this is about grilles! There are a couple options I’ve thought about.

335is grilles: gloss black border and slats, with chrome on the front of the slats

M3 style grilles: chrome border with gloss black slats. The M3 grilles are shaped differently so I’d have to get M3 style to fit my car, or maybe try to take apart my grilles and paint the slats gloss black.

I’m leaning toward going M3 style, but I’m curious to see the prevailing Oppopinion on this. Vote away!

I actually like the look of black kidneys with the shadowline trim, I swapped out the ones that came with the car for some black ones.

Please don’t put M color strips on your kidneys. Looks super tacky/rice.

That will most definitely not be happening.

I’m ok with the all-black grilles on lighter colored cars. On darker cars I feel like without at least some chrome they tend to disappear.

I agree they disappear on black cars.

I have the total flat black grilles, and I think it looks the best on my car, as it is also black.

I feel like that hides the grilles too much. I still want them to be there, they’re an iconic BMW styling element to me. But I’m thinking about reducing the bling some. My 135is had chrome borders with gloss black slats and I think that look works best on darker colors.

And on a blue car, same idea:

Your car is a good example of how the grilles blend in with darker colors. That’s fine if it’s the look you’re going for but I prefer to still see the grilles, just could go for a bit less bling.

I agree. The shadowline trim is a big reason why I wanted the M-Sport. it just looks so much nicer without the bling.

Good luck, my vote will be for the 335is look.

I dunno, I am happy with mine being all black. I’ve just never been a fan of chrome on a BMW grille. The shadowline seems to look alright, though.
